About

Shepherd is a digital livestock management platform built for smallholder farmers managing cattle, sheep, and goats across South Asia. It replaces paper records and farmer memory with a simple mobile interface for tracking animal weight, milk yield, health events, and breeding records.

The challenge

Livestock is the primary asset class for millions of smallholder households in Pakistan and Bangladesh — but the management of that asset was entirely informal. No records meant no credit, no insurance, no market data, and no early warning on disease. The gap between farm-level practice and what institutional buyers or financial institutions required was unbridgeable without a tool.

What we built

Esipick.org built Shepherd as a farmer-first mobile product — optimized for use on low-end Android devices with intermittent connectivity, in a UI that doesn't require literacy to navigate. The backend aggregates herd-level data for extension workers, veterinarians, and lenders.

Outcome

Shepherd demonstrates that meaningful agricultural data can be generated at the farm level without imposing literacy, connectivity, or tech-savviness requirements on the farmer — opening pathways to credit, insurance, and premium market access.
